The Needles Chair Lift

The cable car descent from Alum Bay down to the beach is one of those proper tourist experiences that actually lives up to the hype. You're dangling 200 feet above the sand in a bright red cabin, watching the striped rock formations of the Needles themselves getting closer as you drop toward the water. It takes about five minutes and feels longer in the best way - plenty of time to absorb the scale of it all.

Down at the bottom, the beach is narrow and shingly, with the three chalk stacks of the Needles rising dramatically offshore. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour exploring the rock pools, photographing the stacks from different angles, and buying a bag of the multicoloured sand that Alum Bay is famous for. It's touristy, yes, but the geology is genuinely striking and kids tend to enjoy the novelty of the ride itself as much as what's at the bottom.

The chair lift runs year-round, though obviously it's rougher in winter winds. Budget around ninety minutes total if you're not rushing. It's paid entry - reasonable rather than cheap - and the nearby parks like Tapnell Farm and Shorefield Country Park make logical bases if you're staying longer on the Island. Combine it with a walk along the coastal path toward Totland Bay for a proper half-day out. Go mid-week if you can; weekends and school holidays get rammed with families queuing for the cable car.
