Tennyson Down

White chalk cliffs stretch ahead of you as far as the eye can see, with Tennyson Monument marking the highest point of this dramatic downland walk. The poet laureate himself used to stride these grassy ridges above The Needles, and you'll understand why - the views across the Solent are absolutely spectacular on a clear day.

Walkers will love this place. The South West Coast Path runs right along the cliff edge, offering proper downland rambling with that satisfying crunch of chalk underfoot. Families should note it's a fair old trek from the nearest car park in Totland Bay, and the cliff edges are unfenced - not ideal for small children who don't stick to paths.

The wind can be fierce up here, so bring layers even on sunny days. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full walk from Totland Bay to the monument and back. It's free to access, naturally, being National Trust land.

Perfect for extending a Isle of Wight camping holiday. The Bay Colwell and Heathfield Farm Camping Park are both within easy reach, making this a proper day out from your base. Just don't expect facilities up there - it's wild downland, not a theme park. Bring water and snacks.
