The Mountain Centre (National Park Visitor Centre)

The visitor centre sits right in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, which means you've basically got all of Mid Wales spread out below you the moment you step outside. Inside, it's functional rather than flashy - displays covering the geology, wildlife and history of the mountains, plus the usual café and gift shop. Nothing that'll keep you glued for hours, but it serves a proper purpose as a starting point if you're new to the area or unsure where to walk.

The real draw is what surrounds it. From here you can pick up trails ranging from gentle riverside walks to serious hill hikes. Families with younger kids benefit from the bite-sized information and the fact there's food and toilets on hand. Serious walkers use it as a springboard rather than a destination - grab a map, identify your route, crack on. History buffs will find the Beacons' industrial past interesting enough, though it's not deep-dive stuff.

Frequency and timing matter here. Summer weekends get rammed; autumn mornings are properly peaceful. Allow ninety minutes if you're browsing the centre, or just twenty if you're grabbing a map and heading straight out. The nearby campsites - Cefn Cantref and Toad & Snail are both solid - mean you can base yourself locally and make this your headquarters for exploring the wider park. Worth the stop, especially if you're already in Brecon. Go early or midweek to avoid the coach tours.
