The Mossyard millennium labyrinth

You'll find this one about a mile from Castle Douglas - a proper quirky addition to the landscape that most people driving past completely miss. The Mossyard Millennium Labyrinth is exactly what the name suggests: a large maze cut into the ground, designed back in 2000 to mark the millennium. It's the sort of thing that looks far more impressive from above than it does when you're actually walking it, but that's half the charm.

The labyrinth itself is free to wander, which means you can turn up whenever suits you. It takes somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes to complete, depending on how lost you get and whether you're the type to overthink the route or just follow your instincts. Kids quite enjoy it, though I'd warn you that very small ones might find it a bit samey after the first few turns - there's no dramatic reveals or hidden features, just the steady process of finding your way through.

It works well as a quick stop if you're based at Auchenlarie Holiday Park just down the road, or if you're exploring Dumfries and Galloway more broadly. On its own it's not worth a special journey, but combined with a wider look at the area's castles and countryside, it's a pleasant enough diversion. Go on a dry day if you can - it's less fun squelching through mud trying to remember whether you've been down that path already.
