About Castle Douglas

Scotland's self-proclaimed 'food town' sits on the edge of Loch Ken, where the River Dee widens into this long stretch of water that's become a magnet for water sports enthusiasts. Castle Douglas earned its foodie reputation through sheer determination - local producers, artisan makers and independent shops have turned what could have been another struggling market town into something genuinely special.

The Saturday farmers' market draws crowds from across Dumfries and Galloway, but it's Cream O' Galloway that really puts the place on the map. This working farm and visitor centre does everything from ice cream to adventure courses, and their sundaes are frankly ridiculous in the best possible way. The town centre itself has managed to keep most chain stores at bay, leaving room for proper delis and bakeries that actually know what they're doing.

Loch Ken stretches for seven miles north of town, offering some of the best freshwater sailing and kayaking in southern Scotland. The RSPB reserve at the loch's southern end is cracking for birdwatching, particularly in winter when the whooper swans arrive. Hills rise on both sides - Knockbrex Viewpoint gives you the full panorama without too much of a trek.

Getting here means the A75 from Dumfries, about 18 miles northeast. The town makes a solid base for exploring Galloway's quieter corners, including the ancient burial chambers at Cairnholy and the ruins of Carsluith Castle down towards the coast.

Parks around Loch Ken put you right in the action for water sports, while those closer to Brighouse Bay give you coastal walks and rock pooling. Either way, you're 20 minutes from proper hill walking in the Galloway Hills.
