This one appeals most to history enthusiasts and walkers who like their sites a bit rougher around the edges. If you're after something your kids can bash about climbing on, you might find it a touch underwhelming - it's more think than do. Give yourself an hour to have a proper look around, longer if you're the type to sit about with a thermos and a notebook.

Dunkeld itself is right there, so you can combine it sensibly with a wander through town or a longer hike along the Tay. If you're camped at Inver Mill Farm or Erigmore - both solid options within a few miles - this makes an afternoon's addition rather than a destination in itself. The free access (assuming it remains so) means you can pop by without guilt. The real value comes if you're already in the area and curious about how things actually worked.
