The Market House

The timber-framed Market House dominates Ledbury's high street with the sort of architectural swagger you don't often see anymore. Built in the 17th century, it's got that proper wonky-floored, uneven-beam thing going on that makes you genuinely concerned about the structural integrity while simultaneously finding it utterly charming. The ground floor was originally open-air for traders - you can still see the supporting pillars - while the upper storeys once served as the town hall and courthouse.

Walking through the arches underneath feels like stepping back three centuries, especially on market days when the cobbles are busy with stalls. The building itself is free to wander around, though opening times for any interior access aren't clearly advertised, so check with Ledbury Town Council's website before you visit.

This isn't a sit-down-for-hours attraction. Most visitors spend twenty minutes photographing it from different angles and maybe grabbing a coffee from one of the nearby cafes. It works brilliantly as part of a longer Ledbury town walk - the high street has proper character, and you're close enough to Hereford's attractions if you want to expand your day out.

If you're staying at Mike's Meadow Glamping or Yew Tree Farm, you're barely three miles away. The Turbles and Swallowfields Retreat make good bases too if you're after a slower pace. This Market House is the sort of landmark that anchors a market town - worth seeing, not worth planning a day around.
