The Light

The Light is Holmfirth's proper little theatre, the sort of place that actually makes you want to dress up for an evening out. It's housed in what was once a derelict Victorian building, and someone's done a decent job bringing it back to life with a contemporary twist. You'll find everything from theatre and comedy to live music and film screenings - the programming's thoughtful rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

The venue itself is intimate without feeling cramped. There's genuine personality in the place, and the staff know what they're on about. Comedy nights draw a proper crowd, and if you catch a local theatre company's production, you'll see why people still rate live performance over streaming it at home.

It works well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Holme Valley Camping and Caravan Park is only 3.8 miles away, or Elland Hall Farm if you want something with top-rated facilities. Makes for a decent evening activity during a park holiday, though you'll want to check their schedule in advance since it's not the sort of place with shows every single night. The town of Holmfirth itself has decent pubs and a few restaurants, so you can make a proper night of it without much fuss.

Not somewhere to drag reluctant teenagers, unless they're genuinely into theatre. But if you're after something a bit different from the usual holiday entertainment, it's worth the effort to look up what's on.
