The Ledge

Bill Woodrow's sculptures line the clifftop at The Ledge in Folkestone, and it's genuinely arresting stuff. His monumental bronze and steel pieces sit against the Channel views, which sounds like it should be twee but isn't - they're properly imposing, often witty, sometimes unsettling. You walk between them, and the landscape does half the work for you.

It's free, which helps. There's no formal gallery building here - this is outdoor sculpture on the clifftop path, so you can turn up whenever suits. Allow a decent hour if you want to read about each piece and think. Art history types will spend longer; families with small children might find twenty minutes about right before everyone wants an ice cream.

The real win is how it slots into a Kent coastal break. Folkestone's had a proper renaissance in the last few years, and The Ledge sits nicely in that story - culture without the stuffiness. If you're staying at Varne Ridge Holiday Park or Black Horse Farm, you're minutes away. Greenhill Glamping's only slightly further and would make a nice day-trip anchor.

Worthy detour? Yes, though manage your expectations - it's not a conventional gallery experience. The pieces themselves are thoughtful and well-executed, but the real draw is how Woodrow's work sits in the landscape. Fair warning: if the weather's rough, the clifftop path can be bleak rather than atmospheric.
