The Lake

Water and sky meet in the middle somewhere around Witney, and The Lake is where locals actually go rather than the tourist traps further south. It's a proper working landscape - you'll see fishermen most days, dog walkers on weekends, and the occasional family with a picnic who've stumbled upon it by accident.

There's nothing flashy about it. No cafes, no hire boats, no admission gates as far as I could tell. Just a body of water, some banks to walk, and enough peace to actually hear yourself think. Birdwatchers rate it highly - you get grebes, herons, the usual suspects. The walk around isn't strenuous, though parts can be muddy depending on the season, so bring proper boots if you're visiting in winter.

It works best for those who like understated things: walkers after a gentle couple of hours, photographers in early light, or anyone keen on wildlife without the performance. Kids might manage a lap if you make it a hunt for whatever birds are about, but they won't find a playground or ice cream van.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Cotswold Edge or Grove Farm Glamping, you're well-placed for exploring the wider area. The Lake makes a solid half-morning activity before heading into Witney itself or pushing on to the bigger attractions in the Cotswolds. It's the sort of spot that fills in time nicely between grander plans - and sometimes those turn out to be the best bits of a holiday.
