Brasenose One

The lake sits just outside Witney, a working water that's far less polished than you might expect from the Cotswolds. Brasenose One is essentially a flooded quarry - straightforward, honest, and rather lovely in its own way. You get a decent stretch of water, some reed beds, and proper countryside views. There's a walking route around it if you're after a gentle leg-stretch, though it's not a destination in itself. Maybe forty minutes to an hour if you're not rushing.

It's the kind of place where serious birdwatchers actually find things worth looking at. Walkers passing through the area will appreciate it without getting excited. Families with young children might find it a touch underwhelming unless the little ones are already keen on spotting water birds. The water's there, the path's there, and it does what it says on the tin.

Free access as far as anyone can tell - it's a proper local spot rather than a visitor attraction with facilities. Spring and early autumn are best, when there's actual life around the margins. Winter's a bit bleak, summer too busy with insects.

Stay at one of the caravan parks nearby - Hardwick Parks is closest at just over a mile, or Lincoln Farm Park Partnership if you want something a shade further out. Brasenose One works as a short walk from base rather than a day out. It's the sort of thing to add to a morning if you're already in Witney, not worth planning a trip around.
