Hardwick Lake

The water at Hardwick Lake sits still and dark under the Oxfordshire sky, ringed by trees that crowd right up to the bank. It's a proper working gravel pit turned fishing destination - not a romantic country estate lake, but genuinely peaceful once you're here. The walk around it takes maybe forty minutes if you're taking photos, less if you're just moving through. You'll see anglers at certain spots, families feeding ducks from the near bank, and if you come early enough, the whole place feels like yours alone.

It's good for a break if you're camping nearby - Hardwick Parks sits less than a mile away, making this an easy leg-stretch between pitches or before dinner. The lake itself doesn't demand hours. You're not coming here for dramatic vistas or rare birds, though you might spot both. Come because you want to sit by water for twenty minutes, or because the kids need to burn off energy on a flat, safe loop path.

Access is straightforward from Witney town centre, though the approach lanes are narrow. Bring wellies if it's been wet - the path edges get boggy near the dam. There's no café, no facilities that we could find, so sort yourself out before you arrive. It's free to wander, though if you're planning to fish, you'll need a permit. On a grey day it's moody; on a bright one, rather pleasant. Not a destination in itself, but exactly what you need when you're based nearby.
