The Island

The Island sits just off the coast near St Ives and is properly worth a visit if you're into seabirds or coastal walks. It's a nature reserve where you can spot guillemots, razorbills, and if you're lucky, puffins during breeding season - May through August is your window. The rocky outcrop itself is dramatic, surrounded by rough Atlantic waters, and the views back towards St Ives are genuinely striking.

Access varies depending on tides and seasons, so check locally before you head out - you might walk to it across rocks or reach it by boat depending on conditions. Give yourself a couple of hours if you're coming from Polmanter Touring Park or Haven Riviere Sands, both just down the coast. It's not a stroll-around-the-shops type of outing. You're here for the seabirds, the geology, and the wind in your hair.

Brought binoculars? Good. You'll want them. The birdwatching is genuinely excellent, particularly from April onwards when the colonies are most active. Photographers find plenty to work with too - the light off the water is something else, especially late afternoon.

Family groups with older kids who can handle scrambling and unpredictable weather will get the most from it. Toddlers might find it frustrating - there's no proper facilities, and the walking's rough. History buffs will appreciate the geological story written into the rocks themselves. It's the sort of place that rewards patience and preparation, not a quick tick-box stop.
