The Haven (FAB Swindon)

The Haven is Swindon's railway museum, housed in what used to be the Great Western Railway's main works. Walk through the sheds and you're surrounded by actual locomotives and rolling stock from the Victorian era onwards - no mock-ups, just the real industrial heritage that built the town. The scale of the place hits you straightaway. These aren't tiny models in glass cases; they're massive machines you can get properly close to, some of them still bearing the grime and scars of decades in service.

It's absorbing if you've got even a passing interest in railways or industrial history. Kids under ten might manage an hour or so before restlessness sets in, but anyone who remembers steam trains or enjoys engineering will spend a good three hours here without noticing the time. The exhibits tell the story of how Swindon became what it was - a purpose-built railway town that shaped the entire region.

The museum sits within Swindon itself, which makes it easy to reach from Park Farm Campsite or Second Chance Touring and Residential Park, both just over six miles away. You could easily combine it with a walk around the town's broader railway heritage or pop into the STEAM Museum next door if you want more context. Spring and autumn are best - summer crowds can make the sheds feel cramped, and winter visits can be chilly without proper heating in those vast buildings. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're genuinely interested, longer if you're thorough.
