Cricklade Museum

The museum sits right in Cricklade itself, a small market town just north of Swindon that most people whizz past on the way to somewhere else. Inside you'll find the sort of place that rewards a proper look - Roman artefacts from when this was actually an important settlement, Saxon bits, medieval finds from the town's heyday. Nothing flashy, but it's genuinely interesting if you care about how ordinary people lived rather than just staring at shiny treasures.

The displays cover Cricklade's actual history rather than trying to be all things to all visitors, which is refreshing. You're looking at maybe an hour here, ninety minutes if you read everything and chat to whoever's on duty. Local history enthusiasts will get the most from it - it's not a day-out destination on its own, but it slots perfectly into a broader wander around the Cotswold Water Park area. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dry unless they're already keen on archaeology.

It's a proper community museum, the kind that survives on goodwill and local knowledge rather than blockbuster exhibitions. Worth combining with a walk along the Thames Path, which runs through town, or a visit to one of the nearby parks - Hoburne Cotswold is highly rated and only 3.2 miles away, while Great Farm and Park Farm are both five miles or so further out but excellent for families.
