The Grove

Walk into The Grove and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind of place where the canopy is so thick it feels like dusk even on a bright morning. This forest sprawls across Hampshire near Alresford, and it's genuinely brilliant for anyone who wants to stretch their legs without the theatrical production some nature spots demand.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland paths that meander through beech and oak, plenty of space to breathe, and enough quiet to actually hear birdsong. It's the sort of place families with older kids will enjoy because there's room to explore, but younger ones might lose interest after an hour unless they're particularly keen on spotting wildlife. History buffs may find themselves drawn to the area's wider context - Alresford itself has Georgian appeal - but The Grove is more about the trees themselves than stories.

The nearest proper town is Alresford, just a short drive away, which makes this easy to slot into a wider day out. If you're camping in the area, Woodlands Camping sits only 1.3 miles from here, or Hampshire Hills - the old Two Hoots site - is 3.8 miles away. Either base would give you easy access to a proper woodland walk without needing to trek far.

Bring proper shoes. The paths get muddy, and the ground's uneven in places. Spring's lovely here, though autumn's when the wood really shows off. Worth a couple of hours, not a full day.
