The Gratton Recreational Ground

The Gratton Recreational Ground sits just outside Winchester, a proper slice of Hampshire countryside that doesn't require a map or a postcode to enjoy. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like one - grassland, woodland, and enough walking paths to keep you occupied for a couple of hours without it feeling like a slog.

You get open meadows where wildflowers do their thing in season, plus woodland edges where you might spot birds if you're lucky and quiet enough. It's the sort of place where families with younger kids won't run out of steam after twenty minutes, but it's also genuinely interesting for walkers and anyone interested in local wildlife.

There's no entrance fee - it's freely accessible, which is refreshing. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper circuit, less if you just fancy a stroll. Autumn is lovely here when the light cuts through the trees properly, and spring wildflowers make it worth a visit then too.

If you're staying at Hookpit Farm Caravan Site just down the road, this works nicely as a morning outing without needing to pile everyone in the car. It's close enough to Winchester for an afternoon combining this with the cathedral and a walk around the centre, but far enough out to feel genuinely rural. Not spectacular, but solid - exactly what a local nature reserve should be.
