The Glen

The Glen sits just outside Sheerness as a proper woodland walk through chalk grassland and scrub - the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just trudge through another manicured nature trail. It's a small reserve but genuinely wild feeling, with paths that wind through native trees and open enough stretches that you get a proper sense of the Isle of Sheppey's landscape rather than feeling hemmed in.

Walkers will find the most here. An hour's amble does the reserve justice, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and actually look at things. Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on attractions - there's no visitor centre, no café, no obvious "things to do" beyond walking. But if your children will happily hunt for birds or scramble through woodland, they'll be fine.

It's free to access, though I'd ring ahead or check locally in Sheerness first - the formal opening hours aren't immediately obvious, and it's the sort of place that can be surprisingly quiet. Best visited outside peak summer when the paths aren't overrun.

For a park holiday around Sheerness, The Glen works as a proper outdoor break from whatever's happening at Sheerness Holiday Park or Ashcroft Coast just down the road. It's close enough for a morning visit without eating up your whole day, and it genuinely feels like actual countryside rather than a packaged experience.
