It's not a massive detour if you're staying at Devon Cliffs or Ladram Bay, both within easy reach. The stone itself is a modest outcrop rather than a dramatic monument, but that's rather the point. You get there for the views across the Exe Valley and the sense of being on top of something, not for the rock alone. The whole outing takes a couple of hours at a gentle pace. Worth doing early in the day to beat any crowds on the common, and frankly the light's better for photographs before noon. Woodbury Common itself is free to roam and makes for a decent half-day option if the weather's kind - good for families who don't mind a steady walk, less thrilling for those after proper hiking. The terrain's easy underfoot and there's something rather appealing about the emptiness of it all, especially mid-week. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks for a week, this pairs well with beach days at Ladram Bay or the coastal sections around Exmouth. Not the sort of attraction that'll eat up your whole holiday, but the kind of stop that makes a break from the caravan feel properly adventurous.
