The Factory

The Factory is Kendal's contemporary art space, housed in a converted industrial building that actually feels like a proper working gallery rather than a sterile white cube. The exposed brick, soaring ceilings and raw architectural bones give the place character - you're not walking into some polished corporate foyer. Inside, rotating exhibitions showcase contemporary visual art, craft work and sometimes experimental installations. It's the sort of venue where you might stumble into something genuinely surprising or occasionally something that makes you wonder what on earth you're looking at.

This is squarely for art enthusiasts and anyone curious about what's happening in the wider contemporary scene. If you're expecting traditional paintings and sculpture, you'll find some of that, but The Factory leans toward the exploratory side - photography, video, mixed media, installations. Kids won't get much from it unless they're already gallery-inclined, but teenagers with an art interest? Fair game.

You can usually whip through in 45 minutes to an hour, longer if something really grabs you. It's free to get in, which is always worth knowing.

The location works well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site is barely a mile away, and The Ashes is even closer. It's the sort of thing you'd do on a rainy afternoon during a Lake District holiday, a quick cultural top-up between outdoor walks. Frankly, it beats sitting in a café in the rain.
