Abbot Hall

The grey stone building sits right on the River Kent in Kendal, impossible to miss if you're wandering through the town centre. Abbot Hall is an 18th-century country house turned art gallery, and it's one of those places that punches well above its weight for a provincial museum.

Inside you'll find rotating exhibitions of contemporary art alongside the permanent collection of English paintings and decorative arts. The house itself is the real draw though - high ceilings, period rooms, and proper windows that flood the place with light. There's a decent collection of Lakeland landscape paintings, which makes sense given where you are, but it's not stuffy or overly academic. You can usually work through it in an hour, ninety minutes if you're taking notes.

The courtyard beyond the main building holds a separate museum of English porcelain and glass. It's well-curated but definitely specialist territory - if you're not already keen on Wedgwood and Derby pieces, you'll be done in twenty minutes.

Families with older kids will get something out of it; younger ones might find it a bit slow unless there's a children's activity on. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as part of a broader Kendal morning before heading into the lakes proper. Most of the nearby caravan parks - Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Windermere Camping are both within easy reach - make it a logical stop before tackling longer walks or heading up to Windermere itself.

Well worth an hour if you're in the area. Not worth detouring for specifically, but don't skip it if you're passing through.
