The Dun

There's something rather satisfying about climbing The Dun. It's a proper little volcanic plug that rises above Aberfeldy, and on a clear day the effort pays for itself immediately. The summit isn't particularly high - you're looking at maybe 40 minutes from the car park - but the views across the Tay Valley are genuinely good, stretching toward the Highland hills.

The path itself is well-maintained and straightforward, making it ideal for families who want a walk with actual purpose rather than just ambling about. Kids get a real kick out of standing on top and saying they've conquered it, which is what counts at that age. Adults will appreciate the perspective on the town below and the broader landscape. On a quiet morning there's barely anyone up there, which feels like winning the Scottish weather lottery.

It's free, naturally, and doesn't require booking or any special arrangements. Allow an hour return, maybe an hour and a half if you want to sit about at the top and admire things. The ground can be muddy after rain, so decent boots matter more than the gradient.
