The Dog Hole

The Dog Hole is a proper limestone cave tucked into the fells near Milnthorpe, and it's one of those spots that rewards a bit of effort to find. You're looking at a modest cave entrance - nothing like the grand cathedral passages you get at Wookey Hole - but that's precisely why it's worth the trip. The walk in is straightforward enough, taking you through typical Lakeland countryside before you reach the mouth. Inside, it's cool, damp, and atmospheric in the way only caves can be.

This one appeals most to geology types and anyone keen on limestone formations rather than families after a big adventure. Kids might find it interesting for ten minutes, but there's not masses to do once you're in there - it's more about standing in the space and absorbing the geology. The name itself has sparked plenty of speculation over the years, though the true origin is lost to time.

Access is free and it's available year-round, though you'll want to check conditions after heavy rain as the approach path can get boggy. Allow half an hour including the walk. It sits nicely within reach of the caravan parks scattered around the area - Fell End is barely two miles away, making it an easy afternoon diversion if you're based in the region. Pair it with a proper walk up into the fells proper, and you've got yourself a solid day out. On its own, though? Don't make it your reason to visit Cumbria.
