The Dam

The Dam sits just outside Wroxham in the heart of Norfolk's lake country, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick photo stop. The water itself is calm and reflective, fringed with reeds and dotted with birdlife - herons, cormorants, the occasional swan if you're lucky. It's not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point.

This is walking territory first and foremost. The paths around the water are flat and manageable, which means families with younger kids won't struggle, though toddlers might find the sheer length of the circuit tedious after forty minutes or so. Birdwatchers will get far more from it than casual visitors - bring binoculars and a field guide. Photographers too, especially in early morning light when the water goes all silvery and the reflections actually mean something.

The Dam works brilliantly as part of a broader Norfolk Broads circuit. It's close enough to Wroxham to combine with a proper look around town, and the nearby parks - Hickling Campsite and Norfolk Broads Country Park are both within striking distance - make logical bases if you're planning a few days in the area. Willowcroft, the adults-only option further out, suits those after peace and quiet.

Allow an hour for a gentle half-loop, longer if you're stopping to watch birds or sketch. There's something meditative about it, honestly. Not Instagram famous, but proper Norfolk.
