The Cleve

The Cleve is a proper little water's edge in Oxfordshire that doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's a peaceful spot just outside Wallingford where you can actually sit by the water without fighting crowds, which is rare enough these days. The lake itself is shallow and ringed with trees, making it feel removed from the world despite being close to town.

It's best for people who want a quiet walk rather than a destination in itself. Bring a book, a picnic, maybe binoculars if you're into birds. Kids might find it dull after twenty minutes unless they're the type who enjoy poking about in water and spotting ducks. The walk around takes forty-odd minutes at a leisurely pace, longer if you stop frequently.

Free to visit, and there's no formal entrance or fees to worry about. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want the place to yourself - midday can get a bit busier with local dog walkers. Winter's actually lovely here, quieter and often clearer for whatever views there are.

If you're based at Rolling Fields Glamping or Bridge Villa just down the road, it's an easy half-hour jaunt to break up a camping trip. Ridgeway View is slightly further but still doable. Wallingford itself has better infrastructure and cafes if you want to combine the visit with lunch in town. The lake works well as a morning activity before heading elsewhere in the area - it's the sort of place that fills an hour or two rather than a whole day.
