Blewburton Hill

The walk up Blewburton Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Wallingford, and honestly, it's worth every step. You're climbing an Iron Age hill fort - proper archaeology underfoot - with ramparts still clearly visible where ancient Britons built their defences. The summit gives you sprawling views across the Oxfordshire countryside, all rolling fields and distant church spires. It's not dramatic or Alpine. It's quiet, green, and utterly English.

Walkers will find this straightforward enough, though the path can be muddy after rain and the final push is steep-ish for what it is. Kids do well here if they're old enough to manage the climb without complaining - the fort structures keep them engaged, and the views reward the effort. You'll need a good forty minutes to an hour if you're poking about reading the information boards and taking photos. Bring proper shoes.

The whole thing is free, naturally, and there's no visitor centre or facilities - just you, the hill, and history. Early morning is best if you want solitude. Midday can get busy with local walkers. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Rolling Fields Glamping and Bridge Villa are both within five miles - this makes an excellent half-morning excursion before heading into Wallingford proper for lunch. It connects well with the Ridgeway if you're planning longer walks in the area. Not the most spectacular peak, but undeniably character-filled.
