Wroxhills Wood

This is proper woodland walking territory - the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left the world behind, despite being barely half an hour from Wallingford. Wroxhills Wood is a genuine forest, not some manicured nature reserve with information boards every hundred metres. You get trees, paths, and the occasional moment of genuine quiet that's become rare in the South East.

The woodland itself is mixed deciduous and coniferous, which means it looks different depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells that are genuinely worth timing a visit for; autumn turns the place into that proper golden mess that photos never quite capture. Walking through here takes you properly away from the Oxfordshire commuter belt, even though you're close enough to Wallingford for lunch afterwards.

This is best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than those after a quick Instagram stop. No facilities to speak of, no cafe, no visitor centre - just woodland. Families with kids aged eight and up will get something out of it, particularly if they're the type to spot birds and collect interesting leaves. Serious walkers will find it's a solid detour between other Chilterns walks, though it's not dramatic enough to justify a day trip on its own.

Allow two to three hours if you're properly exploring. Free access, as far as anyone can tell - no barriers, no gates. Time it for autumn or late spring. If you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Rolling Fields or Ridgeway View, it's a natural morning or afternoon slot before heading into Wallingford proper.
