The Child Structure

The Child Structure is a contemporary art gallery just outside Loughborough that punches well above its weight. It's the sort of place that catches you off guard - you're not expecting much from a Leicestershire art space, and then you walk in and find yourself genuinely engaged with what's on display.

The gallery focuses on modern and experimental work, with rotating exhibitions that tend toward the thought-provoking rather than the decorative. Recent shows have explored sculpture, installation, and mixed media from both established and emerging artists. It's not huge - you can cover the main space in forty-five minutes to an hour - but the work is usually worth lingering over.

This is for people who actually like galleries, if we're honest. If your idea of art is a nice landscape painting, you'll probably find it a bit challenging. But if you're the type who enjoys getting slightly annoyed by something conceptual before realising why it's clever, you'll have a proper time here.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Proctors Park or High Meadows Farm are both within a few miles - it's a worthwhile rainy day option or a cultural break from the usual holiday activities. Not a destination in itself, but well worth the detour if you're in the area.
