The Castles

The Castles near Bishop Auckland is one of those archaeological sites that rewards a bit of detective work. What you're looking at are the remains of a motte-and-bailey castle - basically an Iron Age hill fort that the Normans later fortified, then a medieval castle built on top. It's layered history, quite literally.

On the ground, you'll see earthwork banks and ditches that still make a proper impression after nearly a thousand years. There's no interpretive centre or fancy signage, which means it's refreshingly quiet but also means you need to know what you're looking at before you arrive. Bring a map or some historical context, or it's just a bumpy field.

Walkers will find it worth the detour - the site itself takes thirty minutes if you're browsing, less if you're just ticking it off. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a longer loop. This isn't a destination on its own, but fitted into a park holiday based around Bradley Burn Caravan Park or Stag Park just a couple of miles away, it's a decent stop. Bishop Auckland town centre is close enough for lunch or supplies.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it. Children might find it underwhelming unless they're genuinely keen on castles and medieval stuff. Access appears to be free and there don't seem to be set opening hours - it's more of a walk-on site. That's the appeal and the limitation all at once.
