The Campingland

You'll find the remains of a Second World War airfield just outside Swaffham, scattered across what's now mostly farmland and caravan parks. The Campingland itself is what became of the old base - it's where you can still spot the concrete runway and dispersal areas if you know where to look, though nature's done a fair job of reclaiming things since 1945.

This is absolutely one for the history-minded visitor, particularly anyone fascinated by wartime Britain or aviation heritage. Walking the site takes an hour or so, and there's something quite moving about standing on the tarmac where crews once prepared for missions over occupied Europe. The airfield hosted American bombers and British squadrons at various points - each with their own stories.

Admission appears to be free or minimal, though specific opening hours aren't widely advertised, so it's worth calling ahead or checking locally in Swaffham before you go. Spring and summer are best - the paths are properly walkable and you can see the landscape as the crews would have known it.

If you're staying at Breckland Meadows Caravan Park just down the road, it's an easy walk to the site. Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa, further out, makes a decent base too if you're combining this with other attractions in the Breckland area. Don't expect museum facilities or interpretation boards everywhere - this is about understanding a working wartime airfield through what's physically remained.
