The Calf

The Calf sits on the Shap Fell massif, a windswept moorland plateau that separates Kendal from the M6. It's not the kind of peak that grabs headlines - no dramatic granite faces or knife-edge ridges - but the walk up is proper gritty in the best way, crossing open fell with absolutely nothing to soften the wind when it comes.

You'll find genuine moorland here, the sort that reminds you why the Lake District fells feel different from anywhere else. The views from the 676-metre summit stretch across the Pennines and back towards the main fells. On a clear day it's brilliant; in cloud it's bracing. The walk takes around two hours from the nearest car parks, depending on your route, and the terrain is boggy underfoot in places - nothing technical, but you need proper boots.

This is walkers' territory, not a casual family stroll. The reward is solitude and that rare thing - a Lakeland summit where you might actually see more fell than people. It works beautifully as a morning outing if you're based at Two Acre Glamping Pods a few miles south. The walk is free, obviously, and weather dependent - check conditions beforehand because exposed moorland has a habit of turning unpleasant quickly.

Kendal is close enough for supplies or a post-walk pint, but honestly, the appeal here is the walking itself rather than any facilities. If you're after spectacular views and don't mind wind, it's worth the effort.
