The Bowes Museum

Walking up to the Bowes Museum from Barnard Castle, you're confronted by something that shouldn't really exist in County Durham - a sprawling French château that looks like it's been airlifted straight out of the Loire Valley. It's genuinely jarring, in the best possible way.

Inside, you'll find one of the finest art collections in the North of England. The rooms are crammed with European paintings, decorative arts, ceramics, and textiles collected obsessively by John and Josephine Bowes in the 19th century. There's a mechanical swan that actually works - a 18th-century automaton that performs a surprisingly lifelike routine if you catch it at the right time. Kids either find it mesmerising or deeply unsettling.

The real strength here is that it doesn't feel like a stuffy regional museum. The paintings are genuinely good - proper continental stuff alongside British works - and the collections are displayed without any pretension. You could happily spend three hours wandering through, or dash around in 90 minutes if you're selective.

If you're camped at one of the sites near Barnard Castle - Teesdale or Pecknell Farm are closest - this is easily your best wet-weather option. It's a short walk downhill into town first, then up to the museum. Free admission helps, and the café isn't terrible either. Go when you've got time to actually look at things rather than ticking boxes. The building itself is worth the visit alone.
