The Blue Rock Trail

The Blue Rock Trail winds through woodland and meadow just outside Gloucester, and it's one of those walks that actually delivers on the promise of a decent countryside ramble. The trail takes you past - you've guessed it - a striking blue-tinged rock formation that juts out from the landscape, surrounded by beech and oak trees that shift colour with the seasons. It's a proper leg-stretcher rather than a casual stroll, so allow a good couple of hours if you want to take it slowly and actually look about.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The path's well-maintained but can be muddy after rain, so decent boots matter. Kids aged eight and up will probably enjoy it without complaint, though younger ones might find the distance tiresome. History buffs won't find much in the way of ruins or plaques here - this is purely about the landscape itself, which is its strength.

Staying at any of the nearby sites - Passage Farm Caravan & Campsite and West End Farm & Campsite are both within three miles - makes the Blue Rock Trail an obvious add-on for your Gloucestershire holiday. The Roost Retreats and Apple Orchard Camping are slightly further out but still convenient bases. There's no obvious visitor centre or facilities right at the trailhead, so come prepared with water and snacks. Spring and early autumn work best - less mud, better light for photographs, and you'll actually want to linger rather than hurry through.
