The Big Field

The Big Field, just outside Huntingdon, is exactly what it sounds like - a proper expanse of open countryside that gives you proper breathing room if you're camping or caravanning in the area. There's no entrance fee or formal structure here; it's the kind of place you stumble across while exploring the Cambridgeshire landscape, and it works best as a walking destination rather than a destination in itself.

What makes it worth the detour is the flatness. Dead flat, completely uninterrupted views across agricultural land - which sounds dull on paper but actually feels rather freeing after time indoors. On a clear day you can see for miles, and there's a genuine sense of space that the Fens do so well. Walkers will get the most out of it, particularly those who like uncluttered horizons and don't mind a bit of wind.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Crystal Lakes is closest at just a mile away, or Quiet Waters if you prefer something slightly further out - this is an obvious spot for an afternoon leg-stretch. The walk itself is straightforward and takes as long as you want it to. There's not much infrastructure here, so bring a drink and realistic expectations. This isn't a honey-pot attraction with facilities and crowds. It's a field. But sometimes that's exactly what you need when you're on a park holiday in the Fens.
