The Benefice of Padstow Churches

Padstow's churches tell the story of a town that's been mattered for centuries. St Petroc's dominates the high street - a proper medieval church with a tower you can spot from miles around, named after the Welsh saint who supposedly arrived here in the 6th century. The interior's worth the visit: carved roof bosses, a font that's older than the building itself, and enough atmosphere to make you forget about the tourists queuing for fish and chips outside.

What makes the benefice interesting is how these churches worked together as a parish system. St Minver Church, a couple of miles out towards the holiday parks, sits in a quieter corner and shows you what Cornish village churches look like when they're not in a busy seaside town. Both are free to wander into, though opening times can be variable - best to check locally or arrive mid-morning.

Historically minded visitors will get more from this than kids, frankly. There's no interactive element, no gift shop, no reason a five-year-old won't be bored within ten minutes. But if you're staying at one of the holiday parks - Dennis Cove, Porthilly Beach, or St Minver itself - the churches offer a proper sense of how Padstow worked before it became a food destination. An hour's gentle exploration between beach days, really. The walk between them takes you through real Cornwall rather than the seafront crush.
