The Beeches

The Beeches is a proper woodland walk just outside Petersfield - ancient beech trees towering overhead, the kind that make you feel small. It's the real deal if you want to escape the South Downs crowds without driving far. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dappled light filters through the canopy, and on a quiet morning you might have the whole place to yourself.

Walkers will love this. The paths are well-trodden and manageable, though it can get muddy after rain - bring decent boots. Allow a couple of hours if you're in no rush; the forest rewards lingering. Families with young kids find it engaging enough, though there's nothing structured here - no playgrounds, no visitor centre, just trees and air and the occasional sound of birdsong.

What makes it work as part of a park holiday is the contrast. If you're staying at Adhurst Yurts, just three miles away, or Feather Down Manor Farm nearby, you get genuine forest bathing without the faffing about. It's the sort of place that resets your head after a day of activities. Free to enter, no booking needed - you simply turn up and walk. Winter's actually lovely here when the light's low and the branches are bare. Summer can feel crowded mid-afternoon, so go early or late. Don't expect facilities - there's nowhere to buy a coffee - but that's rather the point.
