The Badd

The Badd isn't much to look at on a map - just another lump of Scottish hillside above Dunoon - but the walk up is proper rewarding. You're looking at around 1,500 feet of elevation, and the path from the Dunoon side climbs steeply through woodland before opening onto moorland with views across the Firth of Clyde. On a clear day you can see right across to Ayrshire. The summit itself is bare and windswept, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

This one's for walkers with decent fitness levels and a bit of time to spare. Families with young kids might find the ascent tough going, though older children who enjoy the outdoors will get something out of it. The whole trip takes a couple of hours from town, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no facilities - so bring water and something to eat.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Hunters Quay Holiday Village is closest at under three miles away - The Badd makes a decent half-day excursion that won't eat into your afternoon. It's the sort of walk that gets your legs working without requiring specialist kit or roping in a guide. Just sturdy boots and reasonable weather conditions. Worth the effort if you're after honest Scottish scenery without the crowds of the more famous peaks.
