Blairmore Hill

The walk up Blairmore Hill takes about ninety minutes from Dunoon and rewards you with views across the Firth of Clyde towards Bute. It's not dramatic - no rocky scrambles or dramatic drops - just a straightforward hill path that gets you out of the town and into proper countryside. You'll climb through woodland first, then onto open moorland as you near the top. The actual summit isn't particularly marked, which is either charmingly understated or slightly disappointing depending on your mood.

This is a walker's hill more than anything else. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull - it's a steady plod uphill with limited viewpoints along the way - but teenagers and adults after a decent afternoon outing will get their money's worth. The views at the top are genuinely pleasant rather than spectacular, which honestly suits the run-of-the-mill Scottish hill aesthetic. On a clear day you'll see properly across to the islands, but cloud often rolls in fast, so timing matters.

The walk starts within walking distance of Dunoon centre, making it convenient if you're camped at one of the holiday parks strung along Loch Eck or near the town - Stratheck Holiday Park and The Secret Glen Campsite are both close enough for an easy day out. Wear decent boots because the path gets boggy in patches, and take water. Free, obviously, being a hill. Allow a full afternoon including the descent.
