Benmore Botanics Gardens Entrance

The entrance to Benmore Botanics Gardens sits just outside Dunoon, and it's where you get your first proper sense of scale. These aren't gardens in the English country house mould - this is a 120-acre botanical collection that sprawls across Argyll hillside, with glasshouses, woodland trails, and specimen trees that have been growing here since the Victorian era.

Once through the gates, you're confronted with towering conifers, rhododendron thickets in spring, and genuinely rare plants from around the globe. The layout rewards wandering rather than rushing. An hour isn't enough; plan for at least two to three hours if you want to see the glasshouses and walk any of the woodland paths properly. Families with younger kids might find it a touch heavy on the botanical information, but older children and serious gardeners will be absorbed for hours.

It's a working research garden as much as a visitor attraction, which gives it a different feel from the manicured botanic gardens you find near cities. The entrance fee is modest, and facilities are basic but functional. Benmore sits nicely within a proper Argyll holiday - it's close enough to Loch Eck Caravan Park and Stratheck Holiday Park for a half-day outing, though the weather on the west coast can turn quickly, so check conditions before heading up. The exposed hillside location means wind and rain aren't unusual, even in summer.
