The Auld Muir

The Auld Muir is a gallery tucked into East Lothian's landscape near Prestonpans, and it's the sort of place that rewards curiosity more than crowds. We found ourselves there on a grey afternoon when the light was doing interesting things through the windows, which is when galleries like this really come alive.

It's a working space for local and regional artists, so what you see changes with the seasons and with whoever's showing. On our visit, there was a mix of painting, sculpture, and ceramics - nothing that felt overly polished or corporate, which was rather refreshing. You're looking at genuine creative output, not a curated Instagram experience.

Walkers will appreciate how this sits within reach of Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village and Drummohr Camping, both excellent bases if you're making a longer trip of it. Pop in for an hour between a coastal walk and lunch in Prestonpans town. Families with teenagers interested in art might get something from it; younger children will likely fidget after twenty minutes unless they're naturally drawn to galleries.

The opening hours and admission prices weren't entirely clear when we checked, so do ring ahead before making the journey - East Lothian's full of worthwhile spots, and you'll want to know if it's open before committing. It's a proper local space rather than a slick tourist draw, and honestly, that's rather the point.
