The Astons Recreation Ground

A proper slice of riverside meadow just outside Wallingford, the Astons Recreation Ground does what it says on the tin - it's a working local space where the Thames path winds through rough grassland and willows do their thing along the water's edge. You'll find families with dogs, the occasional angler, and walkers who've ducked off the main towpath to stretch their legs somewhere less trodden.

It's not a destination in itself, but rather the sort of place that slots perfectly into a Thames Valley ramble. The ground is open access and free, with enough room to let kids run about without worrying about the crowds you'd get at more famous stretches. The riverbank here feels genuinely quiet - you can stand still for five minutes and hear almost nothing but water and birds. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing; the meadow attracts waders and the occasional heron.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Rolling Fields, Bridge Villa, or Ridgeway View are all within easy driving distance - this works brilliantly as a morning's soft walk. Allow an hour to loop round without rushing. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring the local school groups and it loses some of its peace. The ground itself can get boggy after rain, so check the forecast and wear proper boots rather than trainers. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what you want when you're after a genuine break from the main tourist trail.
