The Ashes

Dense woodland stretches across this corner of Staffordshire, creating proper walking country just outside Stoke-on-Trent. The Ashes covers a fair bit of ground with well-maintained paths that wind through mixed forest - oak, birch and pine mostly, with decent canopy cover that keeps things cool even on hot days.

Families will find it manageable enough for younger legs, though the terrain does have some gentle slopes that might test toddlers in pushchairs. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space to let them roam and good visibility through the trees. The paths are clear enough that you won't need an Ordnance Survey map, but wellies are wise after rain as it can get properly muddy.

Birdwatchers do well here, particularly early morning when the wood comes alive. Nothing spectacular, but solid woodland species and the occasional surprise. Allow two hours if you're taking your time, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's good.

Location-wise, it works brilliantly as a day out from any of the nearby holiday parks. Hales Hall Caravan And Camping Park is closest at just over a mile, while Intake Farm Campsite and Springfields Countryside are both under four miles away. Good for stretching legs between theme park days at Alton Towers, which is practically next door.
