The Airfield

The Airfield is a working aviation hub just outside Chester in Flintshire, where you can watch small aircraft taking off and landing if you're into that sort of thing. It's not a major attraction in the way theme parks are - there's no queuing or paying admission - but it's a solid spot if you've got a genuine interest in general aviation, or if you're after something different to break up a caravan holiday.

The appeal is straightforward: you get to see planes in action at close quarters. Private aircraft, training flights, the occasional vintage warbird if you time it right. There's something genuinely absorbing about watching a Cessna or a taildragger come in on approach. If you're with kids who love aviation, they'll be glued to the spot. If they're more into bouncy castles, you'll lose them after twenty minutes.

You won't need long - call it an hour if conditions are good and there's activity overhead. Weekday mornings tend to be busier than weekends. Bring binoculars if you've got them. The facilities are basic - it's an active airfield, not a visitor attraction with a café and gift shop.

Staying at Fir Trees Caravan & Lodge Park or Willow Farm Glamping puts you within easy reach. Both are close enough for a morning trip without faffing about in the car. It works as a nice addition to a broader north Wales itinerary rather than a destination in itself, but if you're genuinely interested in aircraft, it's worth the detour from Chester.
