Tewkesbury Nature Reserve

The confluence of the Severn and Avon rivers at Tewkesbury creates something rather special - a sprawling wetland reserve that transforms depending on the season. In winter it floods spectacularly; come spring and you'll find warblers and reed beds alive with activity. The reserve itself is essentially free to roam, though you'll want proper boots if it's been wet.

This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres or marked trails. It's proper wetland - muddy, occasionally boggy, and genuinely rewarding for anyone who knows their way around binoculars. Bird watchers absolutely rate it, especially between April and September when migrants come through. Winter floods bring in wildfowl by the hundred. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Tewkesbury Abbey is barely five minutes away - it's a cracking walk before breakfast.

Allow two hours minimum, longer if you're serious about spotting. Bring a field guide. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog given the muddy terrain, but older children interested in nature will get plenty from it. The views across the flood plain are genuinely lovely, especially from the higher banks looking back towards Tewkesbury Abbey itself.

Park near the town centre and head down towards the rivers - locals know the access points. Don't expect facilities or signage. This is the real thing: unpolished, sometimes squelchy, and absolutely free. Croft Farm Water Park two miles away offers something different if you want variety across a week's stay.
