Testwood Lakes

The lakes at Testwood are what happens when old gravel workings decide to become nature reserves - and honestly, it's rather brilliant. Two bodies of water sit here near Ashurst, fringed with reeds and willows, and they've turned into a proper haven for birdwatchers and anyone after a quieter afternoon away from the crowds.

You'll spot everything from great crested grebes to the occasional kingfisher if you're patient. The walking trails loop around both lakes, and the paths are flat and easy - perfect if you're not in the mood for anything strenuous. Bring binoculars. Seriously, you'll spot far more if you do. There's something genuinely relaxing about standing at the water's edge watching dragonflies skim the surface in summer.

This works brilliantly as a morning or late afternoon stop alongside a wider New Forest break. If you're camping at Longbeech Campsite nearby - which sits at five stars and is only six miles away - you can slip over here for an hour or two without straying far. The reserve is free to access, and you can usually spend a decent couple of hours here depending on how thorough you want to be with the bird spotting.

Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet after the first half-hour, unless your lot are genuinely into nature. But if you're serious about seeing Hampshire's birds or just want a peaceful walk with proper wildlife interest, Testwood Lakes delivers. Pack a flask and plan to linger.
