Temple Wood

Walk into Temple Wood near Shifnal and you're immediately swallowed by proper dense woodland - the kind where light filters through in patches and the undergrowth feels genuinely wild. It's not a manicured forest experience. Roots sprawl across the paths, ferns push through everywhere, and there's a genuine sense of stumbling into something older than the surrounding suburbs.

The wood itself is managed woodland with a good network of paths threading through, making it accessible for families with pushchairs on the main routes, though some trails get muddy and technical. There's something meditative about it - the sorts of woodland that makes you actually want to slow down and listen rather than power-walk through. History types might get a kick from the hint of older settlement, though don't come expecting dramatic ruins or interpretation boards.

Walkers will find a solid hour or two here without breaking much of a sweat. It's genuine enough to feel like an escape but not so remote you're genuinely lost. Bring wellies if it's rained - the paths become proper boggy. Kids under seven might lose interest once the path sameness sets in, but older ones who actually enjoy being in woodland rather than at a playground will get on with it fine.
