About Teign Ferry

A proper working ferry crossing the Teign Estuary between Teignmouth and Shaldon - this isn't a tourist attraction pretending to be functional, it's the real thing. You board a small passenger boat, it takes about five minutes to cross, and you're on the other side. The journey itself is the whole point: watching the water, spotting the occasional heron, getting a different angle on both villages.

It works best for walkers doing longer coastal routes. The ferry links the South West Coast Path sections either side of the estuary, saving a three-mile inland trudge. Families with young kids will enjoy the novelty of the crossing, though it's over quickly - don't expect a long boat experience. There's something satisfying about using a ferry that's been running this route for years, even if it's unglamorous.

Operates roughly 8am to dusk depending on season, and it's closed during winter mornings (November through March, 8-10am), which is odd but worth checking. From the nearby holiday parks around Torquay - Parkdean Resorts and Lady's Mile are both within four miles - you could easily day-trip here. Teignmouth itself has seaside appeal if you're staying for a longer break.

The crossing costs a few quid each way and runs year-round. Go when the tide's right and the light's good. It's not spectacular, but it's useful and unexpectedly pleasant.
