Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve

The Teifi Marshes sit just outside Cardigan, a proper working wetland where you'll actually see wildlife rather than read about it behind glass. Bitterns boom across the reed beds in spring, otters hunt the channels, and on a good day you might spot a marsh harrier quartering low over the water. It's the sort of place where binoculars matter more than a guidebook.

The reserve isn't flashy. There's a visitor centre with viewing platforms and walking trails that loop through the marshland, taking between 30 minutes and two hours depending on how serious you are about bird spotting. The trails are flat and accessible, which makes it decent for families with younger kids, though honestly if your children aren't into twitching, they'll lose interest after the first quarter mile. Birdwatchers and photographers will spend a full morning here without complaint.

It's free to wander the outdoor trails, though you'll want to check opening times before you go as facilities can be seasonal. Early morning visits between April and June reward you with the best birdsong and activity. Visit mid-week if you can - weekends bring casual walkers who tend to be noisier than the marsh wildlife appreciates.

If you're camping at Happy Campers Family Park or Cardigan Camping just up the road, this makes a natural morning sortie before heading into town or along to Cardigan Bay Holiday Park for a beach day. It works best paired with other Cardigan attractions rather than as a day trip destination on its own.
