Taylor Wood

Taylor Wood sits just outside Penrith, a pocket of woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a proper wander if you're in the area. It's the kind of place locals know about rather than something that fills Instagram feeds, which is frankly its strongest point.

The wood itself is fairly straightforward - a mix of broadleaf and conifer trees with a network of paths that loop through at various difficulty levels. Nothing too demanding, though the ground can get boggy after rain. You're looking at somewhere between forty minutes and ninety minutes depending on which trails you fancy and how often you stop. The light filters through in that particular way it does in English woodlands, and if you time it for morning or late afternoon, it's genuinely atmospheric.

This works well for families with kids old enough to manage an hour on their feet - primary school age upwards. It's less thrilling for toddlers unless you want to spend the whole time stopping every five minutes. Walkers doing a longer loop through the Eden Valley tend to pass through as part of a bigger route rather than making it their sole destination.

Combine it with Howdy Glamping or Crossfells Campsite if you're basing yourselves for a few days - both are within two and a half miles. The wood fits nicely as a morning activity before heading to bigger attractions like Ullswater or exploring Penrith town itself. It's free to access, naturally, and there's no real queue problem. Go in autumn when the canopy colours properly, not summer when every other walker from the Lake District seems to pile in.
