Sheriffs Park Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Penrith, Sheriffs Park Wood offers the sort of quiet forest trail you'd actually want to revisit. The trees are dense enough to feel remote, even though you're barely a mile from town. The ground is mostly level with a decent path running through - muddy after rain, mind you, but nothing that needs serious boots.

It's the kind of place that works best for a gentle hour-long amble rather than a full day expedition. Dog walkers seem to make up the bulk of visitors, and you'll see why: it's off-the-beaten-track without being awkward to reach. Families with younger children will get something out of it, though there's no playground or facilities to speak of, so manage expectations accordingly.

The main appeal is simply switching off from the main road noise and getting among the trees. There's genuine woodland atmosphere here - birdsong, dappled light, the works. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow pace rather than speed.

Worth combining with a browse around Penrith town centre, which is close enough for a proper morning out.
